Plastic surgery is a special type of surgery that can involve both a person’s appearance and even ability to function. Plastic surgeons use both reconstructive and cosmetic procedures to change a person’s appearance. Reconstructive procedures correct defects on the face and the body such as cleft lip, disease, birth marks, or deformities. The most common types of reconstructive surgeries are tumor removal, laceration repair, scar repair, hand surgery, and breast reduction. Plastic surgeons use microsurgery to transfer tissue to cover up a defect. Cosmetic procedures alter a part of the body that a person is not satisfied with. A few common cosmetic procedures include making breasts larger or smaller, reshaping a persons nose, or liposuction. Plastic surgery is not always performed with stitching and needles. In some procedures, lasers are used to remove hair or skin problems. People who choose to have plastic surgery or cosmetic procedures usually do it because they do not like their appearance in some way or maybe they want to stand out. Many young adults are likely to request procedures such as nose reshaping, ear surgery, acne and acne scar treatment, and breast reduction.

In order to do plastic surgery, plastic surgeons must have achieved mastery in burn surgery, cosmetic surgery, craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and pediatric surgery. Burn surgery is taught in two different segments. These segments are acute burn and reconstructive burn. Cosmetic Surgery is the same as aesthetic surgery and is an essential part of plastic surgery. Craniofacial surgery deals with the soft tissues and the skeletal part of the body. Hand surgery deals with acute injuries and chronic diseases of the hand and wrist and nerve problems. Microsurgery is more concerned with reconstructing missing tissues. Pediatric surgery involves the study for birth defects or skin problems in children. Plastic surgery is now being used to improve the body and remove its defects.
